Civil War Veterans medal Grand Army of the Republic. Fond Du Luc Wisconsin 44th Annual Encampment. June 6 7 8 1910. W.H. Grinnell (William H. Grinnell 1842-1925) Dept. Commander 1909. Original Veterans medal as issued. The 3rd Wisconsin assembled at Camp Hamilton, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and mustered into Federal service on June 19, 1861. The 3rd Wisconsin Infantry was a part of Gen. Nathaniel Banks' army during Jackson's Shenandoah Valley campaign of 1862. Later in the year, the 3rd Wisconsin took part in the fighting around the Cornfield during the Battle of Antietam. In 1863, after the Battle of Gettysburg, the 3rd was sent to New York, to help control the New York City draft riots. Medal is maker marked. From the Joe Musso Collection.
